3.4.02 -all or nothing

“ Cuz I want it all, or nothing at all “, I am sure that many people can recognize these words sung by a boy band names O-Town in the song called “ All or Nothing “. I am not a huge fan of boy bands, however, I have to admit the fact that some of their songs have actually affected me deeply by bringing me back memories.

In the song of “ All or Nothing “, it basically describes that a guy wants his lover to make the choice of either loving him with all her heart or not loving him at all because he is not willing to stay in a relationship that he can’t get the best out of her. After listening to this song for several times, it reminded me of my previous relationship with someone I had truly cared for; yet, it also reminded me other things that apply to the theme of “ All or Nothing “.

The girl that I had cared for came along in my freshman year in high school. It all happened in a sudden of spark during her surprise birthday party when we lay next to each other watching a horror movie and holding hands (so she could squeeze my hand when scary scenes came up). I have to say that it was one of the most incredible feelings that I had ever felt in my life. With the overwhelming of her attractiveness, then I asked her to be my girlfriend. After that day, the journey of our almost-half-an-year relationship had begun. Although it wasn’t the perfect relationship that I had hoped for, the sour and sweet times that we spent together had made me to appreciate her more, and I was committed for the first time. However, things did not work out well after a fight that we had gotten in. Therefore, our views of the relationship started to diverge and we ended up breaking apart. Even though it seemed to be the right decision for each other, separating from her had not made me stopped caring for her, or loving her perhaps. Until today, I still wonder if I would ever have her again as in “ all “, or it’s simply nothing after all.

Despite the fact that “ All or Nothing “ is a love theme song, I find it to be applicable to other situations in my life too. After winning the football championship with the 12-0 season record, I often have a mix feeling about it. What if we had lost the last game in the championship and ended up with an 11-1 record, would it still be a successful season? After giving much thought, “ No “ is the only answer that I could come up with. Champion is the highest honor in sports which everybody longs for. However, the painful side of reality is that not everybody could have the chance to taste its sweetness. My teammates and I had spent numbers of hours under the blazing sun during the summer for one reason – winning the championship. With all the hard work we had put up and the blood we had shed on the field, wrapping up the season without the champion title would never be as special as it has been. In this case, the champion symbolizes the “ all “. Although an 11-1 season could be one thing to be proud of, losing just one game, the championship game, could have turned the world around and made it to be tearful one. Thus, the meaning of “ All or Nothing “ has become even more significant to me afterward.

“ All or Nothing “ has been one of most memorable experiences that I have encountered through my teenage. Although things sometimes did not turn out to be as good as I had wished for, the sadness had helped to shape up my life and personality along the happiness. After the loss of love, I have become tougher; and after winning the football championship, I have become more grateful about what I have.
