BFFL: The Real Athletes | 12.28.00
So who was your quarterback this year? I remember a kid in marching band asking me last year. I couldn't believe he asked me that. The kid had come to every single one of our games and yet he didn't know who started at the quarterback position. I just shook my head. I heard our team really sucks. That's another comment I get from these kids who go to our games every single week. Well, if you're at the games, then can't you tell that we suck on your own? Bandfags - that's what they're called. Ok, so not all of them are like this. Some people in marching band are nice and cool people. But most are actually TOO cool. I used to think that the band existed as a sideshow to the football game. You know, to provide background music or to give people a small spectacle during halftime? But come to think of it, especially at my high school, it seems like these band cats are the real deal, the MAIN attraction. I mean, as a football player myself, I couldn't tell you who their main conductor was or who their superstar drummer was last year. I was too absorbed with whatever I was doing. So I guess it's ok to have band members be clueless about football because football players don't pay attention to band people either. Having said that, I'll talk about what really bothers me: BandFag Football League (BFFL). You see them playing each weekend in front of the school on the field that the marching band practices on. These kids, wearing sweatpants and headbands are ready to grit it out. Ok, so some athletic fun isn't too bad among trumpeters, flute players, and the drummers. But couple the excitement of the BFFL with the gained notion that hey - we're the real athletes and not our school's sucky football players! There you go ~ a heavenly brew of bandfag arrogance. Screw school spirit. Why get souped up for a football game on Friday nights when the real games are played on Saturdays in the BFFL? Ok, so football players aren't the humblest of people either, but do we go around blowing the clarinet or playing the saxophone on weekends? Nope - that would just be too cool. |
