What's an Educational Summer? | by Samir Ruparel

DDDDDDRRRRRRRRNNNNNNGGGGG!
The bell to your last final exam has just rung and you anxiously run out of the school with your friends. Alas, you are finally liberated from the shackles of education and you praise your luck that you won't be seeing books for another two months. However, some students do not have the same fate, but rather will hit the books for the summer.

Why? Why would some one squander their sacred vacation for more books? Those unfortunate souls who either missed too many days of class or those who failed their classes must go to the notorious summer school, fighting books and the summer heat simultaneously. It's obviously better to waste a few hours a day in the summer than to waste an entire year of your life by staying back a year in school. There are others who want an edge in their competitive academic life and do one of two things. They either take an enrichment course as to preview their upcoming courses or take a credit completion course so they can skip entire courses. Another alternative to education are educational camps where one can go to a "sleep-away" camp and take courses. This allows the student to escape their home town and travel abroad and make new friends.

What? What are the benefits of "flushing" your summer away? One thing that is quite obvious, your mental sharpness will remain intact and you will, of course, receive some extra education. "This ( summer courses ) keep me from looking too stupid when school starts again," remarked Kenneth Chen. That is not the only thing that one can from these courses. Lasting friendships can be formed because you will meet new people undoubtedly. "I enjoy CTY because I learn new things, meet new people, more chances to mack it to babes I don't know, and I like being away from home. It's like a 3 week long real world special," said Welton Chang. The last benefit is a subtle one. As the summer rolls along, boredom can quickly engulf a student. However, with time being "burned" in summer school, each spare moment becomes more valuable than before and the summer can be enjoyed.

Where? Where can one go to these "dreaded" summer courses? There are many locations near and abroad. There are courses in colleges (from Ivy to your local community college ), in high schools, and in programs such as CTY ( Johns Hopkins University ). What about money, you ask? Well, some enrichment and review courses are a few hundred dollars, usually no more than $500 but the credit courses encroach the thousand dollar mark. The sleep-away camps start at $2000 and the longer you go, the more you pay.

As much as it seems, the courses are worth the money. Your free time receives more quality because you have less of it. Friends can be made and the work is to be done. Summer is not all fun and games, but work can be fun. "It's [summer course program] a good experience because you learn a lot in a relaxed environment," said Neeraj Patel. Don't waste your summer lounging around in front of the tube; stimulate that brain and feel no more of that summer drain.
