Who Cares About Monica and Bill? by Peter Kang
|
As any normal person would know, the last six or seven months have been all about Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton. It's on the news every other minute, in every magazine, newspaper, and any other media - heck, we're even talking about it on our own webpage. The mere allegations alluding to a possible affair between the President of the United States and the intern was what exploded this case. Now, almost half a year later, we're only getting into the court proceedings and much more is expected for the media to feast on. All this hype and obsession really does take its toll however, and most people are tired of hearing this stuff everyday. The time has come for us to ask, do we really care about Monica and Bill?
I remember the first time I heard, rather read, this news. I picked up my newspaper on a January morning and saw a picture of Monica Lewinsky printed big on the cover of
The New York Times. The title, which was along the lines of "President Had Affair With Intern" was big enough to make me read the article. I found it interesting and thought what a joy this would be for news networks and magazines. "Perhaps this would be like one of those OJ things again," I thought.
Just recently, Clinton agreed to testify after Lewinsky was given immunity for telling the truth about her affair with Clinton. The details are what the media is into, often talking about the "semen-stained dress" that Monica had after her encounters with Clinton, and also stirring up the discussion of "what is sex?" to see if Clinton had a "sexual relationship" with Lewinsky. Well, all this stuff is interesting to read because Clinton is in fact, our leader and all, but there comes a point when enough is enough and we would like to get on with news of other stuff that's more important to us rather than to Clinton personally. He wasn't elected to provide us with a soap opera, so the media should acknowledge that and quit trying to overexpose it. Plus, news is better when it's given in little doses -
it makes the audience come back for more.
I guess this all boils down to the society we live in nowadays. With the media becoming an integral part of our lives and even a bigger part for celebrities and famous people, we're beginning to see The Truman Show everyday from our TV sets - just flip your channel to CNN or MSNBC to receive premium coverage, or watch your favorite local news station at 11:00 -
What a world we live in.
