But life always has its twists, and I found myself back in my room in New York City as early as January 6th.

In a Nutshell

| A week and a half went by quickly as I worked to restore my exhausted bank account. In the process, I also had some experimental cooking fun in my suite and re-read The Great Gatsby for the fourth time. I also became fond of margaritas, especially the potent ones they make at Nacho Mama’s. Although I feel like I glued myself to the television watching The Real World re-runs over and over again, I fondly remember several things watching Adaptation with Grita and Face, playing X-box with Novi, bar-hopping with a tipsy Grita, watching The Quiet American with Face, a lonely ride to Flushing, the NFL playoffs in 9A1, and establishing greater familiarity with Jukay and Elaine. I was beginning to get very comfortable in the city, but I still missed my home friends, particularly Nigi, Warren, and Welton. Nigi was at home as usual, Warren had gone back early to MIT, and Welton had also returned early to Dartmouth. Reaffirming my belief that the best breaks are those you spend in memorable fashion with your closest friends, I decided that I needed to see these guys one more time before school began. My original plan was a solo-trip from home to Dartmouth and Boston. I knew the great risks involved in a solo-trip: falling asleep on the road, trying to read a map while driving carelessly, feeling lonely while eating alone at a rest area, and regretting ever taking a road trip alone. Thankfully, I was saved from making the solo-trip by Hsin, a tall Jersey Taiwanese girl who went to Barnard and was roommates with my buddy Finkelmon. I wasn’t tight with Hsin or anything, but we had spoken on-line a few times, and I remember having a three-hour conversation with her on how guys should dress during reading week, so I was comfortable enough to invite her on the trip when she expressed interest in going up to Dartmouth. Her best friend was there, and she also had some friends in Boston, so everything would work out nicely. |
