Winter Wonderland

Remember that time it snowed?
We skipped classes and said "who cares" to work,
Chased each other down 116th,
I hit you with a snowball pretty good,
Didn't I?

Picked up a piece of cardboard on the street,
Held your hand as we walked down the steps,
To where paths diverge in the park,
I looked at your nose and ears,
They were red as apples.

You spotted a steep one,
We raced to see who'd get there first,
I let you win but breathed hard,
You felt like a million bucks,
And blew me a kiss.

Up the hill we went,
Slipping and sliding,
And laughing.

You said you wanted to be in the front,
I said "cool" and put the board down,
Gloved hands around your slender waist,
Looking at the top of your sky blue hat,
"Let's go!"

It was fast and you loved it,
Got up and ran up again,
Seeking to repeat that feeling,
The blood rush to the head,
The excitement.

Lost count of the times we rode,
But I mentioned hot chocolate,
Your eyes lit up,
And you said "graham crackers,"
We started to run.

Along the way you slowed down,
Puffing soft white clouds from the mouth,
I saw it in your face,
You wanted to slow it down,
And so did I.

You took small steps towards me,
Put your head on my shoulder,
Wrapping me with mitten hands,
The words started to come out,
"I wish..."

I didn't let you finish.
"I know,
Me too."

The white blanket was no more,
Back to our classes and our books,
Only a deep sigh and sad eyes,
Remembering,
"...time stopped forever."

Remember that day?

No.

Why not?

Because it never happened,
And you never met her....

Yet.
