Last night back at home

Last night back at home
It’s quiet outside
On my way to the video store
To drop this DVD off.

Got Mayer on loud
I’m singing along
Thinking about the words in his song
Am I living it right, too?

Just a few more blocks
And then I’ll be home
But I see the world covered in snow
I should take the long way back.

There’s my middle school
Sweet memories
Break dances, first dates, voices cracking
Tracing the bus route slowly.

Took an hour to walk
Five minutes to drive
Books felt lighter with conversation
The lonely car feels heavy.

Right onto Inman
See the other side
I remember living over there
Quikchek subs and better days.

Left on Villa Road
Feels like déjà vu
It’s six AM and sneaking back home
Or muddy from the big game.

Little townhouses
Pretty snow-topped roofs
I lived over there in the curved street
Twenty-three Sunflower Court.

I feel like a creep
But I’m parked in front
Wondering who sleeps where I used to
Euro books, calc nights, first kiss.

Can’t stay for too long
Hard to keep dry eyes
When your mind replays the best moments
And puts the whole world on pause.

Snap out and drive back
There’s no use being stuck
No free golf balls from the nearby range
We all played mini golf once.

It’s no longer home
That’s why it’s the last
The last time I want to feel like this
As if I had never left.
